Tools of construction

I'm stuck on Photoshop like dung on Velcro. I just love it. However, it's quite expensive for most residents of PixelDam.
Fortunately, there are alternatives. I know a few, but I would like you to suggest other applications you heard of or work with.

A free application that came to my attention last week was GraphicsGale. I have not had the adventure to play with it. Perhaps you have and wish to share your insight and experiences with us.

Other tools I know of are:
- MsPaint
- Corel Paint Sho Pro & Corel Draw

Photoshop does have an elements version. Has all the tools required for pixelling AND layers. About US$50 and often free with other things like a wacom tablet (US$100).

I will link to this running thread we have over at Pixeljoint. If not cool to do so, remove and spank me :D

No problem, bud. I like PixelJoint very much and it's a fellow community.

Any other tools you can recommend?

There are so many out there. As a mac user I don't have much to choose from so its Photoshop/Imageready for me. The PC folk do like ProMotion a whole lot. Graphics Gale gets raves too. MSPaint remains the top choice for most.
I will recommend a stylus/tablet for pixelling. An aquired taste and many don't like it at all. I don't even own a mouse, but then again look at my crap.

LOL.. yeah, you art is horrible...

I have an A3 wide WACOM, though have yet hooked it up :o

Well I do everything using a mouse, I've never had a tablet. Thinking about getting one maybe, who knows... but I'm so used to drawing using a mouse that i really don't feel much need for a change. I usually do my straight lines in MSPaint, since I hate doing that using Photoshop. MSPaint is so simple and so intuitive that it makes it easier for me. I use photoshop for alpha channel, organising elements on layers and adding transparency to textures (that's cheating, I know, so Ive been trying to avoid it lately). I use transparency for shadowing, glasses, water and for roof textures.

Photoshop guy here as well. Before the 1st version of PShop... Picture Publisher for PC, Deluxe Paint on Amiga and Atari St and some more for this last platforms. I love Painter, but for pixel art its features are obsolete. I use a tablet only at work, yet I'll buy some soon as I need it for my other passion - zBrush.

For any Mac user looking for a very cheap alternative to Photoshop for pixelart, try Acorn. I think its awesome for US$40.
Not dumping Photoshop for it but highly, highly recommended.
